Holy Name of Mary Academy
The grade 1,2,and 3's made a few New Years Resolutions that they were determined to follow. Many of the goals incorporated healthy eating and an increase in physical activity. As a class they have had ‘brain breaks’ that enable them to get out of their seat for a couple of minutes and do some sort of exercise that will get their minds going. There has also been an increase in healthy snacks for recess. The students feel much more energized as we take part in active mind and body experiences. On Wednesday, Feb. 12, students brought in some healthy fruit to share as the class made fruit salad, topped with yogurt. They certainly enjoyed munching on an extra healthy snack. Remember…a healthy body makes for a healthy mind!!
During letter “P” week kindergartens read the story book The Wonderful Pigs of Jillian Jiggs and invited their family members into thier class to help them make their very own pigs! It was so much fun and they all loved thier pigs so much. Even Mr. Perry made his very own pig! They took their pigs on a Pig Parade throughout the school too and showed all the other students their cool pigs. What a great activity!
As part of their poetry unit in grade 5/6 they decided to celebrate their great work by sharing it with their classmates each Friday in an open mic session. They used spotlights, an amp and mic, and a black backdrop to set the stage for open mic night. For their final performance they set up a poetry café where they enjoyed many delicious treats and drinks while listening to their fellow classmates perform 2 poems of their choice from their poetry book. The open mic poetry gave the students a chance to perform and share their hard work with their classmates!! Great job guys!
Our Intermediate art students are learning skills in the art of Silk Screen Printing and applying these skills to their own T-shirts! All students have worked through a process of manipulating and drawing their own design symbols to creating a stencil of the design and finally printing their designs on white shirts. The silk screen process involves several steps and the product is a clear, clean image of an object that represents students’ personal interests. An outstanding T-shirt with bright, vivid color is the result. Way to go grades 7, 8 and 9!
The Grade 5-9 French classes of Holy Name of Mary Academy enthusiastically celebrated La Chandeleur on February 3rd by making their own crêpes. Initially, they spent a number of classes learning about the history and traditions associated with this celebration. La Chandeleur also known as La Fête des Lumières, has a long tradition in the French culture and officially occurs on the 2nd of February. Students learned that in the past, this celebration included lighting candles and they really enjoyed attempting the following tradition; holding a gold coin in your left hand while you flip your crêpe with the right hand. Apparently, engaging in such activities was supposed to bring prosperity in the New Year. The students all agreed that this was a delicious way to learn about French culture.
What a fantastic Olympic celebration today at HNMA! We started the morning off with a great opening ceremony, inlcuding an introduction of the athletes, a choral reading of the athletes oath, a great performance of O' Canada, cutting of the ribbon, and last but not least the "lighting" of the torch. Students took part in many events including speed skating, bobsledding, skeleton, biathalon and hockey. Students really embraced the olympic spirit and had a great deal of fun all while demonstrating great sportsmanship. Congrats to all teams/participants and congrats to Team Canada who took home the gold!
